Dashavatara Sthavanam

Amongst the 54 granthas (works) of Sri Raghavendra Teertha Swami, dashavatara stavanam is one of the few short works of his. Sri Narayan Acharya, the author of Sri Raghavendra Vijaya, quotes that Sri Rayaru has written Sri Dashavatara stavana of Sri Hari, as he saw them during his daily pooja. Sri Rayaru praises all the avatara of Lord Moola Raama (Sri Hari) except Buddha and Kalki in this stavanam.

Sri Mantralaya Prabhu starts with describing the avatars (incarnations) as follows,

Meena Roopa (मत्स्यकरूप लयोदविहारिन् वेदविनेतृचतुर्मुखवंद्य, द्वादश स्तोत्र)

Guru Raya describes the Meena Roopa in two verses:

वेदसिद्धमणुतोsप्याणुभावं मोददायि महतोsपि महत्त्वम् |बिभ्रतं प्रथयितुं मनवे त्वां मीनतां शरणायामि भावंतम् ||वेदविप्लुतिकृतं विधिजाड्यं हंत हंतुमदधाज्जलजन्म |मीनभावनभरेण ततो मे विस्तृणीहि विमलं प्रतिबोधम् ||

ವೇದಸಿದ್ಧಮಣುತೋsಪ್ಯಾಣುಭಾವಂ ಮೋದದಾಯಿ ಮಹತೋsಪಿ ಮಹತ್ತ್ವಂ |
ಬಿಭ್ರತಂ ಪ್ರಥಯಿತುಂ ಮನವೇ ತ್ವಾಂ ಮೀನತಾಂ ಶರಣಾಯಾಮಿ ಭಾವಂತಂ ||
ವೇದವಿಪ್ಲುತಿಕೃತಂ ವಿಧಿಜಾಡ್ಯಂ ಹಂತ ಹಂತುಮದಧಾಜ್ಜಲಜನ್ಮ |
ಮೀನಭಾವನಭರೇಣ ತತೋ ಮೇ ವಿಸ್ತೃಣೀಹಿ ವಿಮಲಂ ಪ್ರತಿಬೋಧಂ ||

vedasiddhamanutospyaanubhaavam modadaayi mahatospi mahattvam |bibhratam prathayitum manave tvaam meenataam sharanaayaami bhaavantam ||vedaviplutikri’tam vidhijaad’yam hanta hantumadadhaajjalajanma |meenabhaavanabharena tato me vistri’neehi vimalam pratibodham ||

• O lord moola Ramachandra! I surrender to you, he who appeared as a fish in the hands of King Satya Vrata who was giving Arghya in the middle of Krutha Malikaa river during the Chaakshyusha Manvantara. You appeared as a small fish, and you grew immensely filling all the water bodies thus you demonstrated this well-known Vedic term “अणोरणीयान् महतोमहीयान्.”
• Once, when Sri Chathumuka Brahma was in deep meditation, Hayagriva rakshasa stole Vedas to create Ignorance (अज्ञान) in the minds of Brahma about creation. O Benevolent Moola Rama! you took meena roopa and destroyed Hayagriva and recollected the Vedas and cleared Brahma’s ignorance. We request you to enhance the noble knowledge we have about you.

Koorma Roopa (कूर्मस्वरूपक मंदरधारिन् लोकविधारक देववरेण्य, द्वादश स्तोत्र)

आत्मनैव कमठेन वितन्वन् मंदरेण च भावानराणी द्वे |मंथोsकृत हलाहलवह्निं होतुमिंद्ररिपुवृंदहवींषि ||

ಆತ್ಮನೈವ ಕಮಠೇನ ವಿತನ್ವನ್ ಮಂದರೇಣ ಚ ಭಾವಾನರಾಣೀ ದ್ವೇ |
ಮಂಥೋsಕೃತ ಹಲಾಹಲವಹ್ನಿಂ ಹೋತುಮಿಂದ್ರರಿಪುವೃಂದಹವೀಂಷಿ ||

aatmanaiva kamat’hena vitanvan mandarena cha bhaavaanaraanee dve |manthoskri’ta halaahalavahnim hotumindraripuvri’ndahaveemshi ||

When the Koorma Roopa and Mandhara mountain were made as the fuels, and Indra offered enemies to that fire in the homa, you generated a fire called Kaala Koota by churning Samudra. Who would not praise and celebrate your very joyous and artistic form O Raama.

Varaha Roopa (सूकर रूपक दानव शत्रो भूमिविधारक यज्ञवरांग, द्वादश स्तोत्र)

Guru Raya describes the Varaha Roopa in two verses:

आदिसूकरधारोद्धरणं ते सिंधुबंधु जठरात् श्रुतिगीतम् |मादृशां भवपयोधिगतानां रक्षणे परिचयं तदवैमः ||पूर्णचंद्रगतलक्षणरेखा लक्षिता यदि तदैककलायाम् |संश्रितेंदुमणिदंष्ट्रधरं स्यात् सोपमा भवति सूकरूप ||

ಆದಿಸೂಕರಧಾರೋದ್ಧರಣಂ ತೇ ಸಿಂಧುಬಂಧು ಜಠರಾತ್ ಶ್ರುತಿಗೀತಂ |
ಮಾದೃಶಾಂ ಭವಪಯೋಧಿಗತಾನಾಂ ರಕ್ಷಣೇ ಪರಿಚಯಂ ತದವೈಮಃ ||
ಪೂರ್ಣಚಂದ್ರಗತಲಕ್ಷಣರೇಖಾ ಲಕ್ಷಿತಾ ಯದಿ ತದೈಕಕಲಾಯಾಂ |
ಸಂಶ್ರಿತೇಂದುಮಣಿದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಧರಂ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಸೋಪಮಾ ಭವತಿ ಸೂಕರೂಪ ||

aadisookaradhaaroddharanam te sindhubandhu jat’haraat shrutigeetam |maadri’shaam bhavapayodhigataanaam rakshane parichayam tadavaimah’ ||poornachandragatalakshanarekhaa lakshitaa yadi tadaikakalaayaam |samshritendumanidamsht’radharam syaat sopamaa bhavati sookaroopa ||

• It is evident from the Vedas that you rescued the earth from the bottom of the ocean. By looking at this, we feel that it was an experiment by you to rescue people like us from the ocean called Bhava Saagaram.
• O Adivaraha Ramachandra! Like the moon shining with a black spot, you are twinkling with a blue-mixed-black color body that has two white teeth (दंष्ट्र).

Narasimha Roopa (देव नृसिंह हिरण्यक शत्रो सर्वभयांतक दैवतबंधो , द्वादश स्तोत्र)

Guru Raya describes the Narasingha Roopa in two verses:

तावकं नरहरेतिविरुद्धं वेषधारणमिदं तनुते नः |अत्यसंघटितकर्म च कृत्वा पालये प्रणतमित्युपदेशम् ||दारितोदरहिरण्यकशत्रो रंत्रमाल्यकलितं तव रूपम् |नारसिंह कलयेननुभूतं शारदं जलधरं सहशंपम् ||

ತಾವಕಂ ನರಹರೇತಿವಿರುದ್ಧಂ ವೇಷಧಾರಣಮಿದಂ ತನುತೇ ನಃ |
ಅತ್ಯಸಂಘಟಿತಕರ್ಮ ಚ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಪಾಲಯೇ ಪ್ರಣತಮಿತ್ಯುಪದೇಶಂ ||
ದಾರಿತೋದರಹಿರಣ್ಯಕಶತ್ರೋ ರಂತ್ರಮಾಲ್ಯಕಲಿತಂ ತವ ರೂಪಂ |
ನಾರಸಿಂಹ ಕಲಯೇನನುಭೂತಂ ಶಾರದಂ ಜಲಧರಂ ಸಹಶಂಪಂ ||

taavakam naraharetiviruddham veshadhaaranamidam tanute nah’ |atyasanghat’itakarma cha kri’tvaa paalaye pranatamityupadesham ||daaritodarahiranyakashatro rantramaalyakalitam tava roopam |naarasimha kalayenanubhootam shaaradam jaladharam sahashampam ||

• O Lord, it is known that you take mild form while protecting your devotees and take ferocious form while punishing demons. However, when I look at your current furious form (that you took to protect me when I was Prahlada), I have started feeling that you have taken an oath that you will protect your devotees by doing never-done-before tasks.
• Narasimha roopi Sri Moola Raama, your form after wearing the garland of Hiranya Kashyipu’s gut looks like the cloud filled with lightening during the Sarath ruthu

Vamana Roopa (वामन वामन माणव वेष दैत्यवरांतक कारणरूप, द्वादश स्तोत्र)

जानातं निजमनः परमाणौ मातुमेव बलिनिग्रहदंभात् |वामनं यादभावत्तव रूपं तत्सुखेन भगवन् हृदि कुर्मः ||

ಜಾನಾತಂ ನಿಜಮನಃ ಪರಮಾಣೌ ಮಾತುಮೇವ ಬಲಿನಿಗ್ರಹದಂಭಾತ್ |
ವಾಮನಂ ಯಾದಭಾವತ್ತವ ರೂಪಂ ತತ್ಸುಖೇನ ಭಗವನ್ ಹೃದಿ ಕುರ್ಮಃ ||

jaanaatam nijamanah’ paramaanau maatumeva balinigrahadambhaat |vaamanam yaadabhaavattava roopam tatsukhena bhagavan hri’di kurmah’ ||

In a world, it is difficult for a big object to enter inside a small object. However, because you being so huge cannot enter inside the tiny hearts of saints, you have taken a very small shape of Vamana with an excuse of punishing Bali Chakravarti. Therefore, we pray you very peacefully now.

Bhargava Raama (राम भृगूद्वह सूर्जितदीप्ते क्षत्रकुलांतक शंभुवरेण्य, द्वादश स्तोत्र)

चंद्रमा इव भूवो रचयन्न क्षत्र योगमपि यत्त्वमलासीः |तेना शात्रव यशॊंsबुजराजीमुद्रणं तव कृतिं बहुमन्ये ||

Sri Bhargava Raama, you destroyed the community of Kshatriyas on earth and created Nakshathra Yoga and reduced the budding of lotuses called the fame of enemies, you seem like a bright moon to us, and hence we worship you.

Sri Raama Roopa (राघव राघव राक्षसशत्रो मारुतिवल्लभ जानकिकांत, द्वादश स्तोत्र)

तारणे दुरितनीरनिधेर्नः सेतुभावमचिरेण यियासोः |भासते तव विभो करुणायाः पूर्वरंग इव दक्षिणसेतुः ||

ಚಂದ್ರಮಾ ಇವ ಭೂವೋ ರಚಯನ್ನ ಕ್ಷತ್ರ ಯೋಗಮಪಿ ಯತ್ತ್ವಮಲಾಸೀಃ |
ತೇನಾ ಶಾತ್ರವ ಯಶೊಂsಬುಜರಾಜೀಮುದ್ರಣಂ ತವ ಕೃತಿಂ ಬಹುಮನ್ಯೇ ||

chandramaa iva bhoovo rachayanna kshatra yogamapi yattvamalaaseeh’ |tenaa shaatrava yasho’msbujaraajeemudranam tava kri’tim bahumanye ||

Sri Moola Raamachandra, your act of constructing a bridge seems to us like an experiment to protect your devotees from the ocean of sins.

Krishna Roopa (देवकिनंदन सुंदर रूप रूग्मिणिवल्लभ पांडवबंधो, द्वादश स्तोत्र)

Guru Raya describes the Krishna Roopa in three verses:

बंधनाय कृतमात्मजनन्यास्तादृशं च गुणमंग्यकरोर्यत् |तेन निर्गुणमतानि निरस्यन् दर्शयस्यसि निजां गुणवत्ताम् ||
सर्वदेवरथचेष्टनमंगी कुर्वतस्तव सदैव जगत्याम् |अर्जुनैकरथसारथिभावो विस्मयाय विदुषां न कथंचित् ||
त्वं कुचेलमुनिमीश कुचेलाद्यार्पणेन कृतवानकुचेलम् |सोsभवत्तादपि चारुकुचेलालंकृतस्तदिदमाद्भुतमासीत् ||

ಬಂಧನಾಯ ಕೃತಮಾತ್ಮಜನನ್ಯಾಸ್ತಾದೃಶಂ ಚ ಗುಣಮಂಗ್ಯಕರೋರ್ಯತ್ |
ತೇನ ನಿರ್ಗುಣಮತಾನಿ ನಿರಸ್ಯನ್ ದರ್ಶಯಸ್ಯಸಿ ನಿಜಾಂ ಗುಣವತ್ತಾಂ ||
ಸರ್ವದೇವರಥಚೇಷ್ಟನಮಂಗೀ ಕುರ್ವತಸ್ತವ ಸದೈವ ಜಗತ್ಯಾಂ |
ಅರ್ಜುನೈಕರಥಸಾರಥಿಭಾವೋ ವಿಸ್ಮಯಾಯ ವಿದುಷಾಂ ನ ಕಥಂಚಿತ್ ||
ತ್ವಂ ಕುಚೇಲಮುನಿಮೀಶ ಕುಚೇಲಾದ್ಯಾರ್ಪಣೇನ ಕೃತವಾನಕುಚೇಲಂ |ಸ
ೋsಭವತ್ತಾದಪಿ ಚಾರುಕುಚೇಲಾಲಂಕೃತಸ್ತದಿದಮಾದ್ಭುತಮಾಸೀತ್ ||

bandhanaaya kri’tamaatmajananyaastaadri’sham cha gunamangyakaroryat |tena nirgunamataani nirasyan darshayasyasi nijaam gunavattaam ||
sarvadevarathachesht’anamangee kurvatastava sadaiva jagatyaam |arjunaikarathasaarathibhaavo vismayaaya vidushaam na kathanchit ||
tvam kuchelamunimeesha kuchelaadyaarpanena kri’tavaanakuchelam |sosbhavattaadapi chaarukuchelaalankri’tastadidamaadbhutamaaseet ||

• Hey unbounded Krishna, your act of getting tied by the rope (guna) used by mother Yashodha is broadcasting the message that you are really Brahma with infinite qualities (and denying the sayings that you are nirguna).
• Hey Son-of-Nanda, you are somebody who drives (सारथि) the bodies (देहारथ) of jeevas, and you act of acting as a driver (सारथि) of Arjuna’s ratha (chariot) does not produce any surprises to the saints (gnaani).
• Hey Lord, when Kuchela offered you Avalakki (poha) that was in kuchela (torn cloth, छिद्रवस्त्र), you made him the one without torn cloths (Akuchela) and gave him enough wealth with cows. Even then, he became kuchela (the one dressed in quality cloth). This is surprising. Who can describe the intensity of your courtesy towards your devotees?

एवमादिविविधैरावतारैः पालिताखिलजनौघ मामाघम् |सन्निरस्य कमलास्य नमस्यां स्वीकुरुष्व रघुवंशवतंस ||

Thus, you took different incarnations to destroy the sins of your devotees. You are the Moola Raama with a lotus-like face. Please destroy my sins and accept my salutations.
