Supremacy of Srihari (vishNu)

All living and non-living (chEtanAchEtana) universe, can be divided into two. An independent being – chEtana(svatantra) and rest of all prapancha that includes living and non-living is dependent (asvatantra) on paramAtma.  He (paramAtma) is all independent and controls the rest of the universe.  He is responsible for creation, sustenance, and destruction, he is also controller of the universe, living, and non-living things.  He is the controller of everything and every happening, and hence, he is the Supreme being.  All Vedas say this and are considered pramana.  This the utmost Prameya of Sri Madhva Siddantha.  Brahma, Vishnu, Srihari, Narayana, Paramatma, Bhagavantha, etc., or synonymous of him, and these names are not rudi, but yogika too.

To highlight the supremeness of Sri Vishnu, let us look at few of the attributes (असाधारण धर्म-asAdhArana dharma): पूर्णानंदत्व-Purnanandatva, स्वतंत्रत्व-svatantratva, सर्वज्ञत्व-sarvagnatva, सृष्टादि अष्टकद कर्तृत्व – doing srishtadi ashtaka (जन्म-janma, स्थिति-sthiti, लय-laya, नियमन-niyamana, ज्ञान-gnana, अज्ञान-agnana, बंध-bandha, मोक्ष-moksha), अंतर्बहिर्व्याप्तत्व-antarbahirvyaptatva, पुरुष सूक्त प्रतिपाद्यत्व-purushasukta pratipadyata, कर्मबंध राहित्य-karmabandha raahitya, निखिळवेदवेदांत प्रतिपाद्यत्व-nikhilavEdavEdAnta pratipAdyatva, प्रणव प्रतिपाद्यत्व-parNavapratipAdyatva, सत्वादिगुणराहित्य-satvAdiguNarAhitya, सत्कर्मफलभोक्तृत्व-satkarmabhoktrutva, सर्वत्रसमत्व-sarvatrasamatva, प्रत्येकंसर्वेंद्रिय कार्यकारि विलक्षनेंद्रियत्व-pratyEkamsarvEndriya kAryakAri vilakshnEndriyatva, परमाक्षरत्व-paramAksharatva मुक्तिहेतुभूतज्ञानत्वविषयत्व-muktihetubhutagnanatavavishayatva, अव्यक्तत्व-avyaktatva, अचिंत्यशक्तिमत्व -achintyashkatimatva) and many more attributes decides the supremacy of Srihari (Vishnu).  If we have to define attributes of a thing, then it should not be there in any other thing than the one we are defining it to. For example, if we are defining cow then the caruncle- सास्ना/ಗಂಗೆದೊಗಲು (a loose fold of skin hanging from the throat of a cattle; the dewlap) is unique to it and not to any other animal.  Similarly, all the attributes that was quoted above is unique to Srihari and not to any other devatas.

There are many proofs (pramana vakhyas) in Vedas, Ithihasa Purnas, and Sutras and only few of them are:

  1. ॐ इति ब्रह्म | ॐ नामा भगवान् विष्णुराधिकोच्च गुणत्वतः | Taitreya Upanishad Madhwa Bashya

Omkara is Brahma, Omkara is bhagavan Vishnu, because he alone is Anantakalyana guna paripoorna (abode of infinite auspicious quality that is complete and whole).  All Vedas imply Omkara.  Vishnu is what all vedas propound, and it does not say anyone else other than the Brahman who is Omkaravachya Vishnu.

  1. ब्रह्म – वृद्धौ , which means, he his abode of infinite auspicious quality that is complete and whole (Ananta kalyanaguna paripoorna – अनंत कल्याणगुण परिपूर्ण)
  2. विष्णु – विषर्लु व्यप्तौ , he who as entered (spread) everywhere.
  3. विष – प्रवेशने धातुस्ततृ स्नु प्रत्यययादानु | विष्णुर्यः सर्ववेदेषु परमात्मा सनातनः – वराह पुराण 72-5
  4. विभुत्वात् विष्णुरुच्यते – कूर्म पुराण – 48-11
  5. विष्णु – वि=विषिष्ट पूर्ण ष =चेष्टक ण = सुख उ = स्वाभाविक, He is sarvavyapta, sarvaprEraka, sukadi sakala gunapurna (emobidment of Ananda) 
  6. तद्विष्णोः परमं पदं सदा पश्यंति सूरयः || Rg V 1-22-20.  Vishnu is omnipresent in this universe; he is the indweller (sarvAntaryAmi-omniscient) (अणुरेणु तृणकाष्ठ परिपूर्ण) of all matter (he is everywhere). 

This is what Sri Purandara Dasaru says in his song:

ಗೋವಿಂದಾ ನಿನ್ನಾನಂದ ಸಕಲ ಸಾಧನವೋ
ಅಣುರೇಣು ತೃಣಕಾಷ್ಠ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಗೋವಿಂದ
ನಿರ್ಮಲಾತ್ಮಕನಾಗಿ ಇರುವುದೆ ಆನಂದ
ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಲಯ ಕಾರಣ ಗೋವಿಂದ
ಈ ಪರಿ ಮಹಿಮೆಯ ತಿಳಿಯೋದೆ ಆನಂದ
ಮಂಗಳಮಹಿಮ ಪುರಂದರವಿಠಲ
ಹಿಂಗದೆ ದಾಸರ ಸಲಹೋದೆ ಆನಂದ

3. ऐश्वर्यस्य समग्रस्य वीर्यस्य यशसः श्रियः |
ज्ञान विज्ञानयोश्चॆव षण्णां भग इतीरिता |
ऎवमेष महत् शब्दो मैत्रेय भगवाणिति |
परम ब्रह्मभूतस्य वासुदेवस्य नान्यगः || Vishnu purana – 6-5-74-76

Who is bahgavan? According to Vishnu Purana, one who is gunapurna is bhagavan. He is none other than Vishnu. Aishwarya, Virya, Yasha, sriya, gnana, vignana, these six qualities are called as bhaga, and these qualities are present in Vishnu in totality, and hence he is bhagavan.

  1. Vishnu, Brahma, Narayana, Bhagavan, Paramatma all are synonymous.  All these names talk about one single god – Sri Hari (Vishnu)
    1. ब्रह्मेति, परमात्मेति, भगवान्, इति शब्दते – Srimad BhAgavata 1-2
    2. ब्रह्म शब्दस्य विष्णावेव – SrimadAcharya in Brahmasutrabhashya 1-1-1
    3. स विष्णुराह हि | तं ब्रह्मेत्याचाक्षते | Devimimamsa.
  2. Some of the Shrutis that quote supremacy of Vishnu and all vedashastras ultimately talks about his greatness:
    1. सर्वोत्कर्षे देव देवस्य विष्णोः
      महातात्पर्यं नैव चान्यत्र सत्यम् || पैंगि श्रुति
    2. मुख्यंच सर्ववेदानां तात्पर्यं श्रीपतेः परम्
      उत्कर्षेतु तदन्यत्र तात्पर्यं स्याद् अवांतरम् || महावराहे
    3. युक्तंच विष्णोः सर्वोत्तमत्वॆ एव
      महा तात्पर्यं सर्वागमानाम् || भाल्लवेय श्रुति
    4. स्वातंत्र शक्ति विज्ञान सुखादैः अखिलैः गुणैः

निस्सीमत्वेन ते सर्वे तद् वशाः सर्व दैवच || परम श्रुति

  1. All devatas (Brahma, Shesha, Garuda, Rudra, Indra, Surya, Skanda, etc.,) have a body that gets destroyed one day, and that is the reason they are called as kshara.  Sri Lakshmi who has a body that is not prakrit is called as akshara, and she is infinitely greater than ksharas.  Sri Hari is Ananta Ananta time greater than this akshara purusha Lakshmi:
    1. ब्रह्माशिवः सुराद्याश्च, शरीरक्षरणात् क्षराः

लक्ष्मीः अक्षर देहत्वात् अक्षरा तत् परो हरिः || परम श्रुति

  1. ब्रह्म शेष सुपर्णेश शक्र सूर्यगुहादयः

सर्वेक्षरा अक्षरातु श्रीरेका तत् परो हरिः || स्कांद पुराण

  1. In Geeta, Sri Krishna says, I am the creator of this jaggat. I am the destroyer of it.  I am the father, mother, guardian, Pujya for this jaggat and I am this jaggat.  There is nothing greater than me, I am Supreme.  I am greater than kshara and akshara purushas.
    1. अहं कृत्नस्य जगतः प्रभवः पृलयस्तथा || गीत 7-6
    2. मत्तः परतरं नान्यत् किंचिदस्ति धनंजय
      पिता अहमस्य जगतो माता धाता पितामहः || गीता 9-17
    3. द्वा विमौ पुरुषौ लोके क्षराश्चाक्षरः एवच

क्षरा सर्वाणि भूतानिकूटस्थॊ अक्षर उच्यते

उत्तमः पुरुष स्त्वन्यः परमात्मेत्यु दाहृतः || गीता 15-16

  1. यस्मात्क्षरमतीतोऽहमक्षरादपि चोत्तमः
    अतोऽस्मि लोके वेदे च प्रथितः पुरुषोत्तमः || गीता 15-18
  1. Bhagavatha Purana says that Narayana is Para (supreme), all vedas purport him.  All Devatas are part of him, which means he is Greater than everyone.  The goal of all purpose and karma (yagna, tapa, gnana, tyaga, …) is he alone.  All paths lead to him and reaching him is the ultimate goal.

नारायण परावेदा देवानारायणंगजः |

नारायण परालोका नारायणपरामुखाः ||

नारायण पराज्ञानं नारायणपरागतिः || भागवत 2-5-15-16

  1. Ambrani Sukta says, Lakshmi’s (who creates brahma, rudra, indra, rishis with iccha) shakti is dependent on Para brahma (Sri Vishnu) who is sleeping the ocean: ममयोनि अप्सु अंतसमुद्रे – अंभ्रणी सूक्त.  Srimadhvacharya in one of his stotra (dwadasha) says the same message as: यस्य अपांग लवमात्र ऊर्जिता साश्रीयत्कटाक्ष बलवत् अजितं नमामि (Lakshmi can create, maintain, destroy by a look of her glance.  If one asks how did she get such a strong capability? She answers to this as Sri Hari’s grace gives her such power.
  1.  Harivansh says that there is nothing greater than Vedas in shastras, and there is none greater than Keshava (ka=brahma, Isha=shiva, va= one who does creation, et all and controller of them.

सत्यं सत्यं पुनः सत्यमुद्धृत्य भुजमुच्यते |

वेदशास्त्रात् परं नास्ति न दैवं केशवात् परम् || हरिवंश

हिरण्यगर्भः कः प्रोक्त ईशः शंकर एव च|

सृष्ट्यादिना वर्तयति तौ यत केशवो भवान् – Srimadhvacharya in his Gita Bashya :2-54.

वेदे रामायणे चैव पुराणे भारते तथा |

अदावन्तेच मध्येच विष्णुः सर्वत्र गीयते || हरिवंश

All vedas, puranas, Ithihasa talk about Vishnu only. 

Now let’s look at few Dasara padas which support Sri Hari’s supremacy:

Sri Sripadarajaruಬಿಡಿ ಬಿಡಿ ಸಂದೇಹವ ಪೊಡವಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯರೆಲ್ಲ
ಒಡೆಯನೊಬ್ಬನೆ ಜಗಕೆಲ್ಲ ರಂಗವಿಠಲ ||
Sri Vyasajaruಉಕ್ಕುವ ತುಪ್ಪಕ್ಕೆ ಕೈಯಿಕ್ಕುವೆ ನಾನು
ಚಕ್ರಧರ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನೊಬ್ಬ ನಲ್ಲದಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ||

ಹರಿಯೆ ಸರ್ವೋತ್ತಮ ರಾಣಿ ಲಕುಮಿ ಬೊಮ್ಮ
ಹರ ಇಂದ್ರಾದ್ಯಮರರು ತವ ಸೇವಕರು
ವರತಾರತಮ್ಯ ಪಂಚಭೇದ ಸತ್ಯವೆಂದು
ನೆರೆ ಪೇಳುವ ವಾಯುಮಾಟವಾ ಸುಜ್ಞಾನವನು ||
Sri Vadirajaru ವಿದಿತ ದೈವರೊಳಗೆ ವಿಷ್ಣು ಉತ್ತಮನೆಂದು
ವೇದಗಳ ಒಡನುಡಿಸಲೆ |
Sri Purandara Dasaruಡಂಗುರವ ಸಾರಿರೋ ದಿಂಗರಿಗರೆಲ್ಲ ಭೂಮಂಡಲಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲ
ಪಾಂಡುರಂಗ ವಿಠಲ ಪರದೈವವೆಂದು
ಇಂತು ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಕಾಂತನಲ್ಲದಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು
ಸಂತತ ಶ್ರೀ ಪುರಂದರ ವಿಠಲನೇ ಪರದೈವವೆಂದು || 
ಅಂದೇ ನಿರ್ಣಯಾವಾದುದಕೆ ಸಿರಿ
ಇಂದಿರಾಪತಿ ಪರದೇವತೆಯೆಂದು ||
ಅಂದು ಸ್ವಯಂವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ | ರುದ್ರಾದಿ ಇಂದ್ರಾದಿಗಳೆಲ್ಲರ
ಜರಿಡು ಇಂದಿರೆ ನಿತ್ಯಾನಂದ ನಿರ್ದೋಷ ಗುಣ |ಪೂರ್ಣನೆಂದು ಮಾಲೆಯ ಹಾಕಿದಳು ||
ಸಂದೇಹಾತ್ಯಾಪಿ ನಶ್ಯತಿ ಎಂಬು ಶ್ರುತಿ ವೃಂದಗಳೆಲ್ಲವು ಸಾರುತಿದೆ
ಪುರಂದರವಿಠಲ ಸರ್ವೋತ್ತಮನೆಂಬಲ್ಲಿ
ಸಂದೇಹವ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಸುಖಿಸಲೋ ಜೀವ ||

ಸರ್ವತೋಮುಖ ಸರ್ವನಾಮಕ ಸಾರ್ವಜನ ಸಂಪೂಜ್ಯ ಶಾಶ್ವತ
ಸಾರ್ವಕಾಮದ ಸರ್ವಸಾಕ್ಷಿಗ ಸರ್ವಜಿತ್ ಸರ್ವ ||
